How to Play MKV files on Mac (Mac OS X Mountain Lion included)

To watch MKV video on Mac, I recommend trying either MPlayer OS X or VLC Media Player. They are both free. These free multimedia players are excellent and can tackle many of the video formats unknown to QuickTime. They contain a decoder to decode the MKV files. They will also play many of the formats you will find inside the .MKV file.

  • Employee  2013-05-06 05:54
Seere, you can choose the audio tracks in the main window, or the default one will be used. To add subtitle, click the subtitle option in the main window and load your subtitles in SRT, ASS, or SSA format.

The MKV file always seemed to me like a difficult file to convert. But, after reading about it on your page I started to change my mind about it.
  • FOMIST  2012-10-27 22:21
Could you tell me about other free MKV converters?
  • Employee  2012-08-16 06:27
Hard subs won't loss until you crop the screen, so yes, Video Converter for Mac converts MKV to MP4 without losing the subtitle. For changing soft sub to hard sub, you need to get the subtitle file (SRT, ASS, SSA) and 'burn' to video in "Edit > Subtitle" tab.

Can Video converter for Mac successfully convert MKV with hard subs to MP4 without losing the subtitles?
  • Employee  2012-08-08 09:57
I've searched online for the supported formats by Micromac x444, but in vain. As far as I know, most mobile phones support MP4 or 3GP, try converting video to MP4 with iSkysoft Video Converter: import -> select MP4 as output format -> transfer MP4 files to x444 to play with its video player. Hope that helps.

why don't you go for the paid version, it not only removes the watermark but also the 3 min. time limitation. Believe me, it worth purchasing the software.
  • Karla  2012-07-03 11:41
playing MKV files on mac is a great tension for me. I tried various softs before but none of them worked as well as this. I also tried VLC but it failed to load the video and hangs.

iSkysoft isn't free, it's a trial that leaves a watermark. Also only does the first 3 minutes.
