- Apple's iPhone 3G, KO in First Round
-
Apple's iPhone is the combination of three products – a revolutionary mobile, iPod with a wide touch screen and Internet with e-mail, web browser, browser map and search engine – in a small light edition.
Although Apple has sold about 6 million samples since the middle of 2007, this did not fix the sales which, in the second quarter of the year 2008, stopped at 300,000. What is precisely the reason for such a hurry in eliminating a new gadget generation? Earnings? Technology progress? Personal desire for a place in the sun?At first sight, iPhone 3G is identical to its forerunner. Commands, screen and other details have the same disposition and look completely the same. It is not even so thin than the former version, but, as Steve Jobs says, “thinner on the edges”.
What is different is the rump. The first iPhone had a metal rump which was resistant to scratches. 3G turned out to be a disappointment with its plastic rump. But this time, the keys are in metal, while the original iPhone had plastic ones.It is interesting to compare it with some technical characteristics of similar 3G models. Apple's 3G iPhone should be quicker of the competition in connecting speed.
Another irony is that Apple crushed one of the greatest fears in regards to 3G, a fear that Steve Jobs presented in such a bright light that he almost buried his own product. Last year he explained why the original iPhone used 2.5G instead of 3G wireless receivers: 3G uses the battery too quickly, so it was not worth building in this technology – said Jobs last year.A year later, Apple states that iPhone 3G will have a higher battery power, and will last even up to 5 hours of continuous conversation and up to 5-6 hours if surfing on the internet.
Ah… confused Jobs, with his statements and plans, reminds us of another greatness of hardware and software technology.
If you could connect iPhone 3G to your portable computers, you would use 3G as modem at high speed. A very nice and smart idea, but obviously Apple did not think about it. Most Americans support the idea that it is not right to pay a high AT&T bill for the internet.Did Steve Jobs not say that iPhone 3G users will be able to work with their gadgets wherever they want, wherever they want in whatever time of the day? And did he not mention a week ago that users will have complete control on iPhone 3G?
Totally predictable. Apple installed a GPS in the iPhone 3G, but did it make something special with it? Other gadget on the market have this function too, and they have had it for a longer time, but the Google Maps option was developed so that it could use the GPS function completely. Which, of course, sounds a very innovative options.Another objection is its availability in other countries. It will appear on the market of only six countries at the same time. In the following couple of months it will be launched in 25 other countries, and in autumn or at the end of the year in 70 more. Which does not seem so fair towards other users.
As one of the users of former iPhone stated: “Why should the whole world not experience the future technology in their hands?” – good question.
One (if not the only) of the most important changes in the iPhone is the price. The original iPhone appeared in two models, one cost $ 499, and the other $ 599.The new iPhone 3G will also be released in two models, but at the price will be less than half. The 8GB model will cost $ 199, and the 16GB model $ 299.
Mr Jobs did not want to give comments or a precise reason for this drastic cut. But what we can guess is that Apple is trying to make the iPhone available to all mobile phone users in the world.
Then comes someone big like AT&T and, of course, they can make the rules of the game and ad more objections to the price.
Why? Well, the simplest and most understandable reasons are earnings and control. Control by “locking up” iPhone so that customers do not buy the cheaper and more efficient product, either about the network or your God given right to literally do whatever you want with your iPhone 3G.Let us go back to the capacity of 3G. of course, 16GB is a totally acceptable amount when listening to music, but is it enough? How will you solve the problem related to movies, other programmes and applications, even games? Let us hope that Apple sees the problem.
Since the iPhone 3G was presented, people started debating on why Apple does not collaborate or even work on installing Java or Flash in the iPhone. Neither Apple's most faithful fans will ever forget this mistake.
For a common mobile phone, Java is an important part as most mobile phones have different systems, different system versions and different processor. So Java is the main component, as it moves applications and games.
Flash was presented only at the beginning of this year as mobile phone component. With it you can activate videos, while it has a completely different use on computers.
In a PC, Flash is the plug-in for your internet browser, and in your mobile has always been part of the programmeWhat 3G misses is Flash, as it uses its Safari browser to surf on the internet. It is widely known that Safari can not support Flash, and the question is, will it ever be able to?
Lack of Flash, more memory… iPhone surely has its pros and cons. The only important thing now is, will you accept it for its pros, or will you refuse it due to its cons?
Pros:
High internet surfing speed
You speak and receive data at the same time
New, lower price
Integrated GPS
Cons:
The capacity somehow seems insufficient
The battery autonomy is in doubt and short
Still 2 mega pixel camera
Limited GPS functions
Exclusive of AT&T
