How to get MTS/M2TS files off camcorder to Mac?

HD camcorders like Canon VIXIA HF200, Canon FS200, Canon VIXIA HFS100, Canon VIXIA HG21, Panasonic HDC-HS300, Panasonic HDC-HS20, Sony HDR-CX100, Sony DCR-SR47, JVC GZ-HD40, JVC GZ-HD10 etc. record videos in MTS/M2TS format.

iMovie works with many tapeless camcorders that record to flash memory, a hard disk drive (HDD), or DVD media. This article introduces how to get MTS/MTS files off camcorder and import it to iMovie.However, iMovie may not work with similar camcorders so if your camcorder is not supported by iMovie, you need to convert your clips to iMovie compatible format first.

Note: An Intel processor is required for video support. Mac OS X version 10.5 (Leopard)or later is required for DVD camcorder support. However, to import the HD (AVCHD) content to an Intel-based Mac, you must first erase the SD (MPEG-2) content on the camcorder.

How to get MTS/MTS files off camcorder and import it to iMovie

1. Make sure you disabled the standby mode on your computer.

2. Connect the camcorder to the mains and connect the USB cable to the camcorder (at this stage, do not connect the camcorder to the computer.).

3. Turn the camcorder on.

4. Connect the camcorder to the computer with the USB cable.

5. If DVD Player automatically opens, just quit DVD Player first.

6. Open iMovie and wait until the camcorder is fully detected (this may take several minutes as detection time depends on the movie length.).

7. When the camcorder is detected, movie thumbnails and the Import window appear. If the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) is full, it may take 1.5 hours.

It can take several minutes to over an hour for iMovie to import the video and generate thumbnail images of each clip, depending on how many minutes of video you have. The circular progress indicator in the Import window shows you how long it might take.
